| OLVER SLAMS BUSH'S FAILURE TO HEED ADVICE OF GENERALS |
WASHINGTON Congressman John W. Olver (1st District) released the following statement today:
"President Bush has repeatedly stated that he has followed military advice as to troop levels needed for operations in Iraq. In fact he has repeatedly ignored the advice of his military commanders.
"Prior to the invasion in March of 2003, general after general argued that between 300,000 and 500,000 troops were necessary to successfully invade and pacify Iraq. But instead President Bush ignored that advice and went to war with one third of the force necessary to win the war and the peace.
"Now late in the fourth year of the President's war on Iraq he is again posed to reject the advice of his military commanders. His two top generals in Iraq, Gen. George Casey and Gen. John Abizaid, have opposed the insertion of more troops into Baghdad. But President Bush is forging ahead with this "too-little-too-late" policy of reckless escalation that utilizes the whole strategic reserve of our overextended military and will further inflame the civil war in Iraq."
