Payne Backs Comprehensive Plan to Support Homeowners, Address Mortgage Crisis
- Congressman Donald M. Payne today backed the most comprehensive response yet to the American mortgage crisis. The American Housing Rescue and Foreclosure Prevention Act (HR 3221) will help families keep their homes, aid local communities hit hard by the foreclosure crisis and strengthen the economy and financial markets. The bill was passed today in the House by a vote of 272 - 152. more

Payne Commends International Criminal Court on Genocide Charges
- Congressman Donald M. Payne, Chairman of the House Subcommittee on Africa and Global Health, commended the International Criminal Court (ICC) and its chief prosecutor, Luis Moreno-Ocampo for bringing charges against Sudanese president Omar al-Bashir.  Payne stated, “Yesterday’s decision by the ICC to bring charges of genocide, war crimes and crimes against humanity against Bashir ought to be applauded.  Bashir, for the past 5 years, and his regime have orchestrated a campaign of death, destruction, and rape against the people of Darfur and should no longer be overlooked.” more

Payne Salutes Increase in Minimum Wage to $6.55 an HourThis is Second Step in Three-Step Minimum Wage IncreaseEnacted by Congress In 2007
- On July 24, 2008, the federal minimum wage will rise from $5.85 to $6.55 an hour.  This is the result of legislation enacted by the new Democratic-led Congress in May 2007 – raising the minimum wage from $5.15 to $7.25 an hour over a two-year period.   more

Congress Approves Legislation to Extend Unemployment Benefits
- Congressman Donald M. Payne, a senior member on the House Education and Labor Committee, and a bipartisan majority of his colleagues in Congress today approved legislation that will aid workers who have lost their jobs as a result of an economy in recession. The Emergency Extended Unemployment Compensation Act (HR 5749) will immediately provide up to 13 weeks of extended unemployment benefits to jobless workers in every state and was approved by a vote of 274 - 137. more

Payne Marks 45th Anniversary of the Equal Pay Act with Call for More ActionAnnounces Support for the Paycheck Fairness Act
- Forty-five years ago today, President John Kennedy signed the Equal Pay Act and called it the first step in addressing “the unconscionable practice of paying female employees less wages than male employees for the same job.”  At that time, women earned 59 cents for each dollar earned by a man.  Over the last four and a half decades, the wage gap between men and women has narrowed somewhat to 77 cents for every dollar earned by men.  more
