|
Washington, D.C. – United States Congressman Donald M. Payne today announced that the US Department of Justice has awarded a Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS) grant to the South Orange, NJ police department. Through the COPS Secure Our Schools Program (SOS), the US Department of Justice, has given $11,500 to the police department. SOS grants are given to communities in order to support efforts to improve security at schools. The grants will provide up to 50% of the total cost for municipalities to install metal detectors, locks, lighting, and other equipment that can help deter crime. The grants can also be used to cover 50 percent of the cost of security assessments and training. Representative Payne stated, “Schools are supposed to provide a secure environment in which students can learn and prepare for their future. The SOS grant will afford the South Orange police department and school system additional resources to keep our children safe.” ### |
