Representative Nancy Pelosi (D-CA), ranking Democrat on the Foreign Operations Subcommittee today led Democrats in a successful fight waged on behalf of women, children and families around the world. "The House of Representatives put the cause of women and children worldwide above politics and false arguments by passing the resolution allowing for the release of the international family planning funds on March 1st," Pelosi said.
Opponents to the legislation used abortion as an argument to thwart passage. "Unfortunately, international family planning has become a battleground over abortion. This trend is both ironic and harmful, given that access to family planning reduces unintended pregnancies and, therefore, reduces the number of abortions," said Pelosi. Since 1973 it has been illegal for U.S. funds to be used to fund abortions.
Supporters repeatedly pointed out the environmental benefits of the resolution. "I do not hesitate to characterize this vote, based on the exploding population growth we are experiencing, as vital to the future of the planet, and one that is first and foremost about providing families with the real means to lift themselves from poverty, provide for their children and live with dignity," said Pelosi.
The resolution now goes to the Senate
