WASHINGTON - Representative Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif, is among those recognized this week by the National Farmers Union (NFU) as having an excellent voting record on Farmers Union issues during the 1996 session of Congress. The voting record awards were presented during NFU's legislative fly-in, Sept. 8-10.
Farmers Union evaluated members of Congress on I 5 votes key to the organization's policy positions. NFU recognized members who voted in favor of rural America on issues such as initiatives to improve the Federal Agricultural Improvement and Reform (FAIR) Act of 1996, health care, safe drinking water, pesticide regulation, food safety, welfare reform and education.
"We appreciate the support of congressional leaders who value rural America and the important part it plays in weaving the social and economic fabric of our country," NFU President Leland Swenson said.
Farmers Union members from throughout the country traveled to the nation's capital to meet with members of Congress and Clinton administration officials about concentration in the livestock sector and other areas affecting agriculture, such as transportation and credit. The event, which attracted scores of Farmers Union members from throughout the nation, focused attention on the economic crisis facing family farmers and ranchers.
