Congresswoman Nancy Pelosi Announces a $23.2 Million HUD Grant For Renovation of the Valencia Garden Apartments

Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) today announced a $23.2 million grant from the Department of Housing and Urban Development for the renovation of the Valencia Garden apartments. "Now the residents of Valencia Gardens can look forward to a revitalized neighborhood which will be an inspiration to the entire community," Pelosi said.

The San Francisco Housing Authority (SFHA) will receive the Hope VI Revitalization Grant which will enable it to leverage additional funds to revitalize 260 obsolete public housing dwellings through reconfiguration and the construction of 24 new units at the Valencia Gardens public housing project. In addition to the revitalization at Valencia Gardens, the Hope VI Grant will increase housing opportunities for families in the surrounding neighborhood, providing for construction of 60 units at 1950 Mission Street, of which 24 will be available for low-rent tenants. "A revitalized Valencia Gardens, as a mixed income development, will provide the kind of community that fosters self-sufficiency," Pelosi said.

The project is in partnership with the Mission Housing Development Corporation (MHDC). "Mission Housing Development Corporation is one of San Francisco's finest non-profit community developers. Its participation in this project will help to ensure that Valencia Gardens is renovated to its highest potential and managed to promote the best possible living situation for its residents," Pelosi said.

The Hope VI program gives grants to revitalize public housing as a means of creating neighborhood reinvestment.
