Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-San Francisco), a member of the House Appropriations Committee, announced today that Secretary of Housing and Urban Development Henry Cisneros has awarded $9.644 million in Section 202 funds to build 91 units of senior housing in Visitacion Valley and to provide rental assistance for very low-income tenants in the project.
"Today's grant is testament to the leadership of John King in addressing the needs of our City's seniors." Pelosi said. "The partnership built by John King with Mercy Charities Housing, whose vision, dedication, and technical expertise are making this project possible, is improving the lives of Visitacion Valley residents."
"I thank the Clinton Administration, particularly HUD Secretary Henry Cisneros for their support of this innovative project to ensure that San Francisco's seniors have access to safe, decent and affordable housing," added Pelosi. "I commend Mayor Brown, Marcia Rosen, and the staff of the Mayor's Office of Housing for their work to make this project a reality."
This project is designed to meet the increased need for senior housing in Visitacion Valley resulting, in part, from the loss of rental housing for seniors in the Geneva Towers complex.
The funds will be used for construction of a senior development, including 91 one-bedroom units and a two bedroom manager's unit, and a service center for seniors on-site, and for rental assistance for very low-income seniors who will live at the project. The development is sponsored by three San Francisco non-profit organizations: Mercy Charities Housing California, the John King Senior Center and the Housing Conservation and Development Corporation.
Section 202 housing is a program to provide housing and rental assistance for very low-income elderly residents. Program funds provide financial assistance for construction and rental assistance to the very low-income residents who will live there.
