Rep. Pelosi Helps Launch Educational Initiative on Hunger in America

September 18, 1996

Representative Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) joined other Members of Congress and Feed the Children, a non-profit hunger and disaster relief organization, to raise awareness of the problem of hunger in America and its devastating effects on needy children.

"The recently passed welfare legislation demands that we work harder to provide for children in need", said Representative Pelosi. "How can a country as great as America ignore the needs of our infants and children who are born into poverty?"

According to Feed the Children's 1995 Annual Report, one in five American children currently live in poverty. Every day in America, 2,660 babies are born into poverty and 27 children dies from poverty. Seventy-eight percent of adults in hungry households report that they cut the size of their childrens' meals or children skip meals because there is not enough money for food.

Members of Congress distributed food supplies to representatives from Washington, DC non-profit food pantries, feeding centers and churches.
