Wins Federal Funding for Housing and Community Development Projects

Washington, D.C. -- The House Appropriations Committee has approved more than
$1.5 million in federal funding for fiscal year 2003 Bay Area housing and community
development. These projects, which were funded at the request of House Democratic
Whip Nancy Pelosi (D-CA), will help revitalize sections of San Francisco and provide
much-needed housing and services to vulnerable populations.
"These projects will make a measurable, tangible difference in the lives
of San Franciscans,” said Pelosi, a senior member of the Appropriations
Committee. “These are investments in our parents and our grandparents,
in our neighborhoods and our communities that will pay off for generations to
come."
The projects include:
- $1 million for water and sewer upgrades at the Hunters Point Naval Shipyard,
which is about to be transferred to the City. These upgrades are a first step
toward redeveloping this property.
- $400,000 for the Mission Bay Senior Housing Project, to provide 139 units
of affordable housing for very low-income frail seniors. The project also
includes an Adult Day Health Center, community meeting facilities, a public
library branch and retail and nonprofit community service space.
- $100,000 for the YMCA of San Francisco to help build a new facility in the
Bayview Hunters Point neighborhood and revitalize the YMCA in Chinatown.
The Appropriations Committee’s bill must still be approved by the full
House of Representatives, which has approved only five of 13 appropriations
bills this year, despite being 10 days into the new fiscal year. The bill must
then be reconciled with the Senate version of the Fiscal Year 2003 appropriations
bill for Veterans Affairs and Housing and Urban Development, and Independent
Agencies.
