Washington, D.C. -- House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi released the following
statement this morning at a news conference held to kick off "Keeping Our
Promise: Democrats' National Day of Prescription Drug Town Hall Meetings."
Like many of her Democratic colleagues, Pelosi will hold a town meeting on Medicare
prescription drugs tomorrow in her district.
Thank you all for coming this morning, and thank you to all of my colleagues
for participating in the National Day of Prescription Drug Town Hall Meetings.
We are taking the fight to the American people.
This weekend, Democrats will hold more than 70 town meetings in 27 states all across the country to talk to our constituents about the Republican attempt to unravel Medicare.
We will educate seniors about the problems of this bill. We are going to explain to our constituents that this bill is not the prescription drug benefit our seniors want and need, but a callous attempt to dismantle Medicare.
The ugly facts of the Republican bill will speak for themselves, and the reaction we will get is clear: As Bill Novelli, the head of AARP said this week, The more people hear about it, the less happy they are.
So we are taking this show on the road. Democrats are going to make sure that people do hear about it while there is still time to get this right.
Once they know the facts, we hope seniors will make their opinions known to their Members of Congress. Unless we can improve this bill -- and provide seniors with the guaranteed, defined prescription drug benefit under Medicare that they deserve -- we must stop this cruel hoax on the American people.
