Congresswoman Nancy Pelosi
Pelosi Statement on Senator Trent Lott's Comments
December 10, 2002
WASHINGTON, D.C. -- At a press conference this afternoon, Democratic Leader-Elect
Nancy Pelosi made the following statement regarding Senator Trent Lott's comments
last week:
"I understand that Senator Lott has made an apology. He can apologize all
he wants. It doesnt remove the sentiment that escaped his mouth that day
at that party. And I find it something that is unacceptable. I dont know
what the remedy is to it. But I do know that what Senator Lott said was completely
inappropriate. I dont know if any apology is adequate."
"It is astounding that the person who is going to be the next Leader of the
United States Senate said that he wished that a segregationist had been elected
President of the United States to avoid all the problems and difficulties our
country experienced. This is an astounding betrayal of what was on his mind."
