Congresswoman Nancy Pelosi

Pelosi Statement on Senator Trent Lott's Comments

December 10, 2002

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- At a press conference this afternoon, Democratic Leader-Elect Nancy Pelosi made the following statement regarding Senator Trent Lott's comments last week:

"I understand that Senator Lott has made an apology. He can apologize all he wants. It doesn’t remove the sentiment that escaped his mouth that day at that party. And I find it something that is unacceptable. I don’t know what the remedy is to it. But I do know that what Senator Lott said was completely inappropriate. I don’t know if any apology is adequate."

"It is astounding that the person who is going to be the next Leader of the United States Senate said that he wished that a segregationist had been elected President of the United States to avoid all the problems and difficulties our country experienced. This is an astounding betrayal of what was on his mind."
