Millions for San Francisco Transportation Projects Included in House Transportation Bill

$52.5 Million for Golden Gate Bridge Seismic Retrofit
$21.5 Million for City's Transportation Projects
Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) today announced the inclusion of $52.5 million for the seismic retrofit of the Golden Gate Bridge as part of the recently passed Building Efficient Surface Transportation Equity Act (BESTEA). "This is a major investment in the future of our local economy," Pelosi said. "The Golden Gate Bridge carries 130,000 vehicles per day. Protecting the bridge against the damaging effects of an earthquake is an important priority for Congresswoman Lynn Woolsey and me."
$21.5 Million for City's Transportation Projects...
Rep. Pelosi also successfully included funding for the following projects:
- $9.375 million in funding for construction of a new downtown bus terminal to replace the outdated Transbay Transit Terminal (TTT);
- $9.375 million for the South Bay Basin Bridge to Hunters Point;
- $2.5 million for development of a new MUNI bus garage at Islais Creek;
- South Bayshore corridor of the 3rd Street Light Rail Line is authorized as a new-start project. (No appropriation included.)
"These projects are significant because they address the transportation and environmental concerns of our thriving downtown business community and our neighborhoods," Pelosi said.
BESTEA now goes to President Clinton for his signature.
