Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) today praised President Clinton for moving forward on the appointment of Bill Lann Lee of California to be Assistant Attorney General for Civil Rights. "It's unfortunate that the Republican leadership decided to play politics with this nomination, leaving the President with no alternative but to make this interim appointment. In the end the people of the United States are the winners. Bill Lann Lee is eminently qualified to lead the Civil Rights office," Pelosi said.
Lee has the support of the Congressional Asian-Pacific Caucus, Congressional Black Caucus and the Congressional Hispanic Caucus. He has most recently served as the western regional counsel of the NAACP's Legal Defense Fund.
