Congresswoman Nancy Pelosi wrote the following letter to the editor concerning an article printed in the San Francisco Chronicle on AIDS funding cuts:
Editor -- Your article on HIV/AIDS funding cuts in San Francisco ("S.F. AIDS funding cut by $4 million," Jan. 10) did not address the impact of President Bush's irresponsible tax cuts on HIV/AIDS funding and other key priorities.
Bush's tax giveaways are the leading cause of record-budget deficits that Republicans are now using as an excuse to cut funding for health, education, environmental protection, housing and homeland security initiatives.
To partially offset the impact of reduced funding for Ryan White and other HIV/AIDS programs, I secured $1.5 million in the recently passed spending bill for HIV/AIDS services in San Francisco, and also worked to fix the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services' flawed grant process, which has harmed San Francisco and several other major metropolitan areas. Unfortunately, until Bush and his administration make health funding a higher priority, we will continue to see vital services cut.
Democrats will continue to push for responsible budgets that better serve people living with or at risk for HIV and AIDS.
Rep. NANCY PELOSI
House Democratic Leader
