Pelosi:
FEMA Releases $1.4 Million Grant for Retrofit of Conservatory of
Flowers
October
29, 2004
San Francisco
-- House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi announced today that the
Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has released $1.4 million
in Hazard Mitigation Grant Program funds to the City of San Francisco
for additional costs on the retrofit of the Conservatory of Flowers,
located in Golden Gate Park.
"The Conservatory
of Flowers is a national treasure that is close to the hearts of
many San Franciscans. With additional support, FEMA established
itself as a true partner in this endeavor," Pelosi said.
The grant money
is intended for a structural retrofit of the conservatory, which
consists of a central dome with entry vestibule and two greenhouse
wings. The dome and wings are large open spaces, providing horticultural
exhibits for student groups and tourists. Listed in the National
Register for Historic Places, the conservatory also houses and preserves
endangered plant species.
