Pelosi: 'After Losing More than Three Million Jobs, Bush Needs to Do More than Add One at Commerce Department'

Washington, D.C. -- House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi released the following statement today in response to President Bush's announcement that he would create an assistant secretary of commerce for manufacturing:

"The President's willingness to finally acknowledge the crisis in American manufacturing that has unfolded on his watch is a welcome development, but it is not enough. After losing more than three million jobs since he took office, President Bush will need to do much more than just add one at the Commerce Department.

"The problem is the President's economic policies, not a lack of staff to implement them. His tax cuts for those who need them least are simply not working, and his budget is shortchanging our country's needs. We have lost 2.5 million manufacturing jobs -- we clearly need a dramatic change in economic direction.

"Democrats will continue to fight for a fair, fast-acting, and fiscally-responsible economic stimulus plan, including a tax incentive for U.S. manufacturers, that will create jobs now."
