Pelosi Delivers $2.2 Million for Muni Central Subway

San Francisco -- House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi announced that the Federal Transit Administration today released more than $2.2 million for the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency's (Muni) new Central Subway. This is the last installment of the $9 million Pelosi secured in the fiscal year 2004 transportation spending bill for the Central Subway.

“This Central Subway will connect the long-isolated neighborhoods of Bayview-Hunters Point and Visitacion Valley with the business and cultural centers of downtown,” Pelosi said. “It will promote commerce and economic development, improve mobility, and reduce air pollution for all of San Francisco.”

The Central Subway is one of the City of San Francisco's highest transit priorities, as well as a top priority for the Bay Area's next generation of regional transit expansion projects.

This funding is part of Muni’s Third Street Light Rail Transit Extension Phase II. It will extend the rail line underground into San Francisco's Chinatown District with a 1.5-mile subway. This funding will support preliminary engineering and environmental studies for the Central Subway. Phase II is expected to be completed in 2012. Ridership on the line is expected to be 67,000 on an average weekday by 2015. Phase I of the project included a 19 stop light-rail line that will be completed in 2005 and is funded almost exclusively by state and local sources.
