Washington, D.C. – Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Afghan President Hamid Karzai held a brief press availability before their meeting today in the Capitol. Below are the Speaker’s remarks:

“Good afternoon. It is a pleasure to welcome President Hamid Karzai of Afghanistan back to the Capitol.

“It is a concern to us that the international effort that was begun seven years ago to rid Afghanistan of the consequences of the Taliban have not proven to be successful as of yet. We look forward to a candid discussion with the President on how we will continue to work together to fight terrorism in Afghanistan, which we consider to be central in the war against terrorism.

“It is with great friendship, great confidence in his leadership and great anticipation of the productive conversation that I welcome Mr. President to the Capitol. Mr. Boehner, the Republican Leader, is going to join us momentarily, and I know he joins me in extending this welcome to the President.”
