December 19, 1997

Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) today announced a series of Department of Housing and Urban Development grants totaling $17.3 million, designed to support the City of San Francisco's Continuum of Care Homeless Assistance System. "Taken as a whole these 20 projects, funded through the Supportive Housing Program, represent a commitment to offer homeless people the housing and services they need to move out of homelessness and into a life of independent living," Pelosi said.

The City and County of San Francisco is the recipient of the lion's share of the money, receiving nine grants totaling $10.6 million. The remaining grants went to:

-Swords to Plowshares, $1,474,914
-The Salvation Army, $1,409,221
-Chemical Awareness and Treatment Service, $1,019,398
-Larkin Street Youth Center, $1,007,505
-Catholic Charities, Archdiocese of San Francisco, $840,873 (2 grants)
-St. Vincent De Paul Society, $420,523
-San Francisco Network Ministries Housing Corp., $266,418
-Central City Hospitality House, $159,534
-Women's Alcoholism Center, $82,462
-State of California, Dept. of Housing and Community Development, $33,920

"Under the leadership of Mayor Willie Brown, the city is pioneering new methods of serving the most vulnerable and disenfranchised in our communities. These various projects are the backbone of the City's attempts to deal with homelessness in our community," Pelosi said.
