Congresswoman Nancy Pelosi Announces $50,000 HUD Grant For Bernal Heights Housing Corporation's AIDS Housing Program

November 3, 1997

Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) today announced a $50,000 grant from the Department of Housing and Urban Development for the Bernal Heights Housing Corporation's program to assist homeless families with dependent children who are living with HIV/AIDS and also suffering from substance abuse and/or mental illness. This grant is in addition to the $845,541 HUD awarded the Housing and Outreach Transitional Strategies Collaborative (HOTS) last year. "This is an important community-based program which provides a safe and supportive environment for some of the most vulnerable people who are trying to live with HIV/AIDS," Pelosi said.

HOTS is using the grant to acquire four units of housing where a variety of services can be centrally provided. These services include housing, mental health and substance abuse services, AIDS care and children's services. "By linking existing AIDS housing and service providers with those who work with the homeless, as many as 95 adults and 120 children will be helped by this program," Pelosi said.

The Bernal Heights Housing Corporation, Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of San Francisco, Legal Services for Children, and the Edgewood Family Center are the organizations behind HOTS. "I want to commend the Bernal Heights Housing Corporation for putting this group together in order to help improve the lives of these families," Pelosi said.
