Congresswoman Nancy Pelosi Announces $250,000 Special Education Research Grant For San Francisco State University
Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) today announced a research grant of $250,000 from the Department of Education for the Department of Special Education at San Francisco State University. "This grant will fund a three year study to investigate ways that we may better assist children with severe disabilities in the classroom," Pelosi said.
According to researchers at San Francisco State University, the challenge is to work with school teams to unify the various programs that exist in ways that support all children in general education. "Disabilities do not destroy a child's ability to enrich the classroom environment," said Pelosi. "If we can pool our resources and work to make school more fulfilling for disabled children and their classmates, then we have served the entire student body."
Presently, programs like Healthy Start and Beacon Schools operate independently. The study will look at ways that integrate all facets of special education with general education programs. The researchers will publish their findings and provide a protocol for school systems to follow that will combine resources for the best possible scholastic experience for all children in the classroom.
