Congresswoman Nancy Pelosi
PELOSI GETS COMMITTEE NOD FOR $7.9 MILLION IN SF
WATER PROJECTS
June 20, 2000
The House Appropriations Committee, acting Tuesday at the request of
committee member Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-SF), approved $7.9 million in local water
projects for the San Francisco Bay Area.
The funding was part of a $21.74 billion spending bill for energy and water
projects that was approved Tuesday. The overall spending bill, however, falls
nearly $1 billion short of the Clinton Administration’s FY 2001 request. Among
the SF projects funded by the House committee were:
- San Francisco Harbor: $2.57 million in funding for dredging and
maintenance of shipping channels in San Francisco Bay to ensure vessel
passage and safety;
- San Francisco Bay Drift Removal: $2 million to eliminate floating debris
and navigation hazards in the Bay and surrounding waters. The amount of
debris is calculated at 1300 tons a year, due largely to heavy storms in the
area.
- San Francisco Bay Delta Model: $2.38 million to provide for the annual
operation of this educational model of the Bay’s water systems and its
ecology.
- San Francisco Bay Underwater Navigation Hazards: $700,000 to improve
navigation safety where submerged rocks and shallow shoals exist and create
potential hazards to vessel travel in the Bay.
- San Francisco Bay Long Term Management Strategy: $200,000
to continue the area-wide approach to solving dredge disposal in San
Francisco Bay.
