Pelosi Statement on Bush Administration's Proposed U.N. Security Resolution on Iraq

September 3, 2003

Washington, D.C. -- House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi today released the following statement on news reports that the Bush Administration is circulating a proposed Security Council resolution strengthening the role of the United Nations in rebuilding Iraq:

"For too long, the Bush Administration's plan for bringing stability to Iraq has relied on U.S. troops taking almost all the risks, and American taxpayers paying virtually all the bills. The announcement that the President has finally decided to seek a resolution from the United Nations Security Council is a welcome admission that the current policy is not realistic and not sustainable.

"The Administration said the war was undertaken to enforce U.N. resolutions. Clearly, the U.N. should play a major role in the occupation and reconstruction. To the extent that the lack of a Security Council sanction has been an obstacle to U.N. members contributing troops and money to bring about stability, the United States should make every effort to remove that obstacle."
