Military Academy Nominations

To be considered for an appointment to one of the U.S. service academies, an applicant must have a nomination from his or her Representative, Senator, or the Vice President of the United States. As the Representative for Mississippi's 3rd District, Congressman Pickering may have five students from the district attending each of the academies at any one time.

To be eligible for a nomination, the student must be at least 17 years old, but not have passed their 22nd birthday, as of July 1 of the year of admission. Applicants must also be unmarried, not pregnant, have no legal obligation to support children or other dependents, and be a U.S. citizen.

Admittance to the Service Academies is very competitive. Before nominating an applicant Congressman Pickering carefully evaluates each applicant's academic record. Therefore, all applicants should include their high school transcripts, class rank, and either the Scholastic Assessment Test or American College Testing scores with a letter requesting nomination. Along with this information, applicants should include their date of birth, year in school, name of school, county of residence, and social security number. In addition, please provide three letters of recommendation from individuals that are familiar with your work or scholastic experience.

Once Congressman Pickering has collected the information from interested applicants, he follows a competitive nomination process. With this method, Congressman Pickering submits to an academy an unranked slate of up to ten nominees for each vacancy in his allotment. The candidates are then ranked in order of merit in accordance with the chosen academy. The most highly qualified is selected by the academy for an offer of admission.

If you are interested in seeking a Congressional nomination, please include the necessary information and send it to Congressman Pickering at:
