Budget and Spending

Spending in Washington is out of control. The President’s 2010 budget contains more deficit spending than all eight of President Bush’s budgets combined. When I first came to Congress, I served on the House Budget Committee and worked with President Clinton to negotiate four balanced budgets in a row. Fiscal responsibility is possible, but only when there is the political will.

Both parties in Washington are responsible for out of control spending. Before the Democrats took control in 2006, I had voted against a full third of my own party’s spending bills. The situation has only gotten worse under Speaker Pelosi. Now, Medicare is facing insolvency in just eight years and Social Security is close behind. Getting our fiscal house in order is critically important.
