Reps. Pitts and Larsen respond to plans to replace the EA-6B Prowler.

Washington—Congressman Joe Pitts (R, PA-16) and Congressman Rick Larsen (D, WA-02), co-chairs of the Electronic Warfare Working Group, made the following statements regarding the Services plans to replace the EA-6B Prowler.

Congressman Pitts said, “While I am pleased that the Navy, Air Force, and Marine Corps recognize the need replace the EA-6B Prowler, I am concerned that each Service seems to be moving in a different direction.  I believe this will hurt the support jamming mission that is essential to gaining and maintaining air superiority.

“At this time, I am supportive of the EA-18 Growler option.  I think is the most cost effective, timely, and capable option on the table for the Navy.  However, the Navy cannot afford to sustain the Service-wide, standoff jamming mission.  The Air Force must be an active partner in this mission, but I, as a former EW officer onboard B-52s, am concerned about plans calling for standoff jamming version of a B-52.

“I look forward to being briefed by the Services in the coming weeks to learn more about how they plan to ensure this critical mission remains strong as they replace the aging Prowler fleet.  This is one of the most important acquisition decisions the Services will make over the next decade.  Congress must be well informed and work closely with the Services on this issue.”

Congressman Rick Larsen said, “As the Representative for NAS Whidbey, the home of the Prowler, I am supportive of proceeding with the Growler.  The Prowlers are aging and a replacement is badly needed to ensure the continuing effectiveness of our nation’s electronic warfare capability as new threats arise.  Replacing the Prowler is key to guaranteeing the safety of our servicemen and women.
