Rep. Pitts leaving for Pakistan, Afghanistan tonight

Oversight, humanitarian relief are trips’ focuses

Washington—Congressman Joe Pitts (R, PA-16) will be leaving this evening for a weeklong trip to Pakistan and Afghanistan.  Congressman Pitts serves on the House International Relations Committee and the Subcommittee on the Middle East and South Asia, which has congressional jurisdiction over affairs in that part of the world.  Congressman Pitts will also be meeting with aid workers, refugees, and government officials in both countries.  Congressman Tony Hall (D, OH) and Frank Wolf (R, VA) will be traveling with him.

“There is no more important part of the world today than South Asia,” said Congressman Pitts.  “Congress has appropriated billions of dollars for military and humanitarian efforts in Pakistan and Afghanistan.  In part because I serve on the appropriate subcommittee, Speaker Hastert asked me to represent Congress in taking a look at our operations there.”

The trip will take 9 days, including four days of travel.  The Congressmen will return on January 11.  They will be in Kabul, Afghanistan, January 6 and 7.

Congressman Pitts, who has been to Pakistan previously, has an established relationship with President Pervez Musharraf and will meet with him again.  He will also be meeting with the interim government of Afghanistan.

Congressman Pitts will also be meeting with aid organizations, some of which he has worked with in the past.  The Congressman believes strongly in “people to people” diplomacy, convinced that strong personal relationships between people of two countries is often very effective in building peace and cooperation between nations.

In April of 2000, the Congressman organized the donation and shipment of a mobile medical clinic to serve the rural poor of Afghanistan.
