Washington—Rep.
Joe Pitts (R, PA-16) made the following statement today regarding the collision
of an American surveillance plane with a Chinese fighter jet:
“I am very troubled by the collision Sunday of a
Chinese fighter jet and a U.S. Navy EP-3. It’s
important that China abide by international standards and permit the return of
the plane and its crew. Under no
circumstance should China be allowed to board or inspect the plane.
This would be a major breach of our national security.
The EP-3 is a sophisticated intelligence and surveillance asset that
plays an important role in the Navy’s electronic warfare mission.
Our EP-3s are few in number and highly tasked. We cannot afford to have this plane or its crew retained in
China and out of commission for too long.”
