Rep. Pitts
issues statement on President’s
Iraq
speech
“We
cannot suggest to the terrorists that our commitment to democracy has an
expiration date.”
Washington—Congressman Joe Pitts (R, PA-16) issued the following
statement regarding President George W. Bush’s primetime speech on
Iraq
this evening.
“The enemy we face in
Iraq
is tough. These terrorists are
determined to kill as many innocent people as possible to stop democracy.
But we were right to go into
Iraq
. Because we did, the Iraqi
people have already held free and open elections, are on the way to a
self-sustaining democracy, and no longer fear their own government.
Today, their government is working for them, not against them.
We cannot desert them now and we cannot suggest to the terrorists
that our commitment to democracy has an expiration date.
It will be hard work to turn the security of
Iraq
over to the Iraqis. But it’s
the right thing to do and we have the very best soldiers in the world doing
it,” said Congressman Pitts.
