Rep. Pitts Votes for Gulf Coast Reconstruction Bill

Bill denies tax breaks to area businesses capitalizing on gambling and adult entertainment

Washington—Congressman Joe Pitts (R, PA-16) today voted in favor of H.R. 4440, the Gulf Opportunity Zone Act of 2005.  This legislation creates enterprise zones in the areas devastated by Hurricanes Katrina, Rita, and Wilma by providing tax benefits for investment in these areas.  The bill explicitly denies these tax incentives, however, to casinos and businesses capitalizing on adult entertainment.  It passed today in the House by a vote of 415-4.

“The Gulf Coast remains largely demolished from the destructive forces of the hurricanes that swept through that region earlier this year,” Rep. Pitts said.  “One of the best things government can do to speed reconstruction efforts is to ease the tax and regulatory burden on these areas.  This bill strikes the right balance by providing investment incentives for legitimate business along the Gulf Coast, while making sure to avoid government’s involvement in the reconstruction of businesses that contribute to the erosion of communities.”
