Congressman Pitts’ Statement on
President’s Budget Proposal

Washington—Congressman Joe Pitts (R, PA-16) issued the following statement today regarding President Bush’s federal budget for fiscal year 2007:

“The President today sent Congress a budget that sets priorities in these tough budgetary times.  By increasing spending on national security, the President continues to show his unyielding commitment to a strong national defense and winning the war on terror.  But this budget also takes into account the need to put our fiscal house in order.  By reducing non-security discretionary spending and trimming more than 100 programs that are not delivering results, this budget takes a step toward fiscal responsibility.

“The greatest threat to long-term fiscal stability in America is the unsustainable growth of entitlement spending.  Unfortunately, Democrats in Congress have been unwilling to work with the President on his proposal to reform Social Security and make it fiscally sustainable.  While I hope to see the President return to Social Security reform in the future, I applaud him for the significant entitlement savings proposed in this years’ budget.”
