Reminder on the Need to File Tax Returns to Receive Stimulus Payments

Beginning in May, the United States Department of Treasury will start sending economic stimulus payments to more than 130 million households. To receive a payment, taxpayers must file a 2007 federal income tax return.

Many individuals, including senior citizens with at least $3,000 in Social Security income, may qualify for payments even though they do not ordinarily file income tax returns. Such individuals have until October 15th to file a tax return and still receive their payments this year, but the IRS has warned that filing after April 15th may delay the receipt of payments.

The payments for senior citizens who qualify for the rebates are a minimum of $300 for an individual and $600 for a couple. Others who may qualify despite not usually filing an income tax return include certain veterans and low-income workers.
