Health Care Debate ContinuesHealth care remains a continuing topic of debate and discussion in Congress and throughout the country. Congressman Todd Platts held a series of five town hall meetings this summer during which health care was a dominant topic. He also recently conducted a live telephone town hall in which well over a thousand constituents participated at some point during the call, as well as participated in a town hall-style discussion on the radio, and continues to meet with constituents on a regular basis to discuss their topics of concern – including health care. Congressman Platts is opposed to the health care bill that has been considered in three House committees (H.R. 3200). His statement in opposition during the mark-up by the Education and Labor Committee is posted on the web site, as is a copy of the text of H.R. 3200 itself. Please click on the “Top Story” for Congressman Platts’ statement, and click on the button entitled “H.R. 3200: American’s Affordable Health Choices Act” to read the bill language: http://www.house.gov/platts/index.shtml. When Congress returns to session in September, the health care debate is likely to continue. Congressman Platts urged Congress to reject H.R. 3200 and similar legislation that inevitably would lead more people into government-run health care, and instead enact legislation that will empower individual Americans to obtain good health insurance for themselves and their families. He cited a number of alternatives that he has cosponsored, including: legislation aimed at protecting the doctor-patient relationship from interference by the federal bureaucracy (H.R. 2516); legislation that would allow small businesses to pool their resources in order to obtain more affordable insurance for their employees (H.R. 2360); medical malpractice reform legislation that could help to bring down health care costs (H.R. 1086); and, legislation that would offer a refundable tax credit of up to $3,000 for families who have to buy their own insurance (H.R. 879). |
