Key Votes

The following is a list of some key votes taken by the United States House of Representatives during the month of July of 2010:

Unemployment Extension (H.R. 5618)

The House voted 270-153 to pass an extension of unemployment benefits through November 30, 2010.  To qualify, a worker must have worked at least 20 weeks prior to being laid-off.  The number of maximum weeks of benefits will vary based on the state unemployment rate.  A final version of the bill was signed into law on July 22, 2010.  Congressman Todd Platts voted in favor of H.R. 5618 and therefore in favor of the extension.

Pay for Unemployment Extension (H.R. 5618, “Motion to Table”)

Prior to passage of H.R. 5618, the House voted 220-196 to block consideration of an amendment to the bill that would have offset its costs.  Specifically, the amendment would have paid for the extension of unemployment benefits by rescinding unspent stimulus funds.  Congressman Platts voted against the motion “to table” and therefore voted in favor of paying for the extension of benefits with unspent stimulus funds.

SECTORS Act (H.R. 1855)

The House voted to pass workforce training legislation introduced by Representatives Dave Loebsack (IA-2) and Todd Platts (PA-19).  The bill would facilitate more “sector partnerships” at the regional level within specific industries - such as manufacturing, national information technology, and healthcare.  The goal of these partnerships is to both advance employment opportunities for workers as well as to promote the long-term competitiveness of the industries.  H.R. 1855 passed in the full House without objection.
