What happens during an internship?
An internship gives students the opportunity to see first hand what transpires in a Congressional office. Internships are scheduled to correspond with the Fall, Spring, and Summer semesters. During the course of an internship, the intern participates fully in the duties of the office. Students are given the opportunity to observe committees, the House and the Senate, and other government agencies in action, if interning in Washington, D.C. Students who are interning in the 19th District will provide constituent service.
Who is eligible for an internship?
An undergraduate college student who is a resident of the 19th Congressional District of Pennsylvania and has completed their freshman year of undergraduate studies by the beginning of the internship is eligible to apply. They may be attending any college or university of their choice. Please note, however, that due to the large number of applications received, weight is given to the class level (ie…freshman, sophomore, junior, senior) of each applicant.
How are interns selected?
Interns are selected based on academic performance, extracurricular activities, and a sincere interest in government. Computer and office skills are also a requirement for selection. The selection of interns is made on a non-partisan basis.
Are internships paid positions?
All internships are unpaid positions during the Fall and Spring semesters.
Summer interns receive a weekly stipend and dormitory housing while in Washington, D.C. from the 19th District Internship Association.
