Pryce Congratulates Hilliard Darby High School’s Performance in the Columbus, Ohio – Congresswoman Deborah Pryce (R-Columbus) announced the winners of the 2007 Congressional Art Competition for high school students in her district. The competition is part of a national Congressional art program called, “An Artistic Discovery.” This year, Hilliard Darby High School took the top three honors. Every year, the winning piece of art from each participating district is put on display as part of the national exhibition in the Cannon Tunnel, a pedestrian walkway leading to the U.S. Capitol. "There are so many gifted, young artists in Central Ohio and the Artistic Discovery program provides a wonderful opportunity for them to showcase their talents,” Pryce said. “I congratulate Hilliard Darby High School for its remarkable performance, and thank all who took the time to participate.” Pryce added, “I encourage families visiting the U.S. Capitol Building over the next year to view the exhibition, and soak in the vast array of entries from districts all across our nation.” The first place winner was Darby senior Sean Hicks for his black and white photograph entitled, “Alone at the Top.” In addition to Sean’s piece remaining on display in Washington, he and his family are invited to attend a gala reception in the nation’s capital on June 28 th to kick off the 2007 "An Artistic Discovery" exhibition. Southwest Airlines graciously donated ticket vouchers for the family’s travel to Washington. Second place went to Darby junior Carli Fernandez for her pastel self portrait she named, “Simply D-Flat Major.” Finally, Kayla Burwell, a senior, rounded out Darby’s top three sweep with “A Ribbon in Time,” also a black and white photograph. Each of the three top prize recipients received a generous gift certificate from Blick Art Materials in Dublin. Now in its 26th year, "An Artistic Discovery" is the annual nationwide Congressional High School Art Competition initiated by Members of the United States House of Representatives. Pryce has participated in the "Artistic Discovery" program since her first term in 1993.
