WASHINGTON -- U.S. Rep. Jim Ramstad (MN-03) today joined colleague Mark Kirk in introducing legislation to commemorate the heroes of United Flight 93 who saved the U.S. Capitol and countless lives on September 11, 2001 from the terrorist-hijackers’ attack.
“This legislation, the American Heroes Act, calls for statues in the new U.S. Capitol Visitor Center to honor the heroic sacrifices of Tom Burnett, Jr. of Bloomington, Minnesota and the other three heroes of United Flight 93,” said Ramstad.
Thomas E. Burnett, Jr., who grew up in Bloomington and graduated from Jefferson High School, was one of the heroes who led the passenger revolt against the hijackers aboard Flight 93.
“As President Bush said, Tom Burnett was a true hero of United Flight 93 on September 11 because he put his country ahead of his own life,” said Ramstad.
“The heroes of Flight 93 won the first battle in the War on Terror, and they should never be forgotten,” said Ramstad.
“This would be a fitting tribute to a true American hero and Minnesota native who gave his life in the War Against Terror,” said Ramstad. “Led by Tom Burnett, the passengers aboard Flight 93 showed tremendous courage in taking on the evil terrorists who intended to kill as many innocent Americans as possible.”
“As we approach the third anniversary of a defining day in America’s history, it seems appropriate that we recognize the ultimate sacrifice of ordinary Americans who found themselves in extraordinary circumstances and performed acts of absolute heroism,” said Rep. Ramstad.
