Transportation

Modernizing transportation infrastructure in Kentucky’s Second Congressional district has been one of my highest priorities since coming to Congress. An updated and efficient infrastructure system is a key to economic development. I have secured nearly $40 million in Federal dollars to support vital projects. Recent highlights have included:

  • $8 million for the Heartland Parkway. The project will provide four-lane access to a large part of Kentucky previously restricted by lack of major routes. The new highway will create direct access to numerous new businesses, three state parks, three private colleges and numerous civil war battlefield sites.
  • Designating the Audubon and Natcher Parkways in western Kentucky as future interstate spurs. These spurs will provide Owensboro with direct access to the future I-69 and I-66.
  • $525,000 for repairing and upgrading the Hardesty Bridge in Washington County. Large vehicles used for farming and commercial needs will not be permitted to use the bridge.

Bridge Safety

In light of the terrible bridge collapse in Minnesota, the safety of our nation’s bridges is on everyone’s mind. I am working with the United States Department of Transportation and the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet to ensure that the Second District’s bridges are safe. Also, I will work with my colleagues in Congress to provide the necessary funding to repair structurally deficient bridges in a fiscally responsible way.

Highway Bill

The 109th Congress passed the Safe, Accountable, Flexible, Efficient Transportation Equity Act: A Legacy for Users (SAFETEA-LU). On August 25, 2005, President Bush signed the bill into law. This important legislation authorized the nation’s federal highways, public transportation, highway safety, and motor carrier programs. SAFETEA-LU addressed issues Kentuckians encounter everyday; problems like congestion, driver safety, and inefficient highway projects. The Highway bill will be up for reauthorization in 2010.
