TransportationModernizing transportation infrastructure in Kentucky’s Second Congressional district has been one of my highest priorities since coming to Congress. An updated and efficient infrastructure system is a key to economic development. I have secured nearly $40 million in Federal dollars to support vital projects. Recent highlights have included:
Bridge SafetyIn light of the terrible bridge collapse in Minnesota, the safety of our nation’s bridges is on everyone’s mind. I am working with the United States Department of Transportation and the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet to ensure that the Second District’s bridges are safe. Also, I will work with my colleagues in Congress to provide the necessary funding to repair structurally deficient bridges in a fiscally responsible way. Highway BillThe 109th Congress passed the Safe, Accountable, Flexible, Efficient Transportation Equity Act: A Legacy for Users (SAFETEA-LU). On August 25, 2005, President Bush signed the bill into law. This important legislation authorized the nation’s federal highways, public transportation, highway safety, and motor carrier programs. SAFETEA-LU addressed issues Kentuckians encounter everyday; problems like congestion, driver safety, and inefficient highway projects. The Highway bill will be up for reauthorization in 2010.
