Dan Stessel, New Jersey Transit, (973) 491-7078Rothman Secures $2 Million to Renovate Rutherford Train Station
(Hackensack, NJ) Congressman Steve Rothman (D-Fair Lawn) announces $2 million to renovate the Rutherford Train Station. To date, Rothman, a member of the powerful House Appropriations Committee, has secured $9.85 million for Bergen County transportation projects in addition to his efforts to deliver federal funds for the Northern Branch commuter rail. This funding is administered by New Jersey Transit and the $2 million was officially designated for the Rutherford Station in late March.
The Rutherford Train Station is one of the most widely used stations in our area. Yet, during extreme weather conditions, passengers are forced to wait outside because the interior as well as the exterior need major improvements. I applaud Mayor Bernadette McPherson and New Jersey Transit for their advocacy and look forward to continuing our work as we move this project forward. Our goal is to refurbish the station inside and out so that it gives these rail commuters the services they deserve, said Rothman.
According to New Jersey Transit, the $2 million in federal funding secured by Rothman will be used to restore the stations waiting room, including the plaster, woodwork, paint, and floor, as well as the stations exterior doors and windows. NJ Transit will also improve the waiting rooms electrical system, including the outlets, switches and lights.
The Rutherford Train Station was erected in 1898 and has served as a key transit center for Rutherford residents for over 100 years. Renovations will be completed in accordance with historical guidelines to maintain the buildings century-old elegance. Design is expected to be completed by the end of this year, with construction beginning in spring 2008 and ending in 2009, says NJ Transit.
We greatly appreciate Congressman Rothmans ongoing support of NJ TRANSIT, and were gratified that he was able to secure funding that will allow us to move forward with restoration of Rutherford Station, said NJ TRANSIT Executive Director Richard Sarles.
I am pleased to inform the Council that Congressman Steven Rothman has successfully secured funding to restore and preserve the Rutherford Train Station, said Rutherford Mayor McPherson at a March 20th Council meeting. The borough and NJ Transit have been working together on methods to maintain and repair the Station. It is a beloved focal point of our community and a significant piece of our history. Congressman Rothman has always recognized that and his efforts on the Boroughs behalf demonstrate that.
Known as the Bergen County Inter-modal Project, this funding was secured in multiple transportation spending bills between Fiscal Year 2002 and Fiscal Year 2006. The money can only be used for projects within Bergen County, though Rothman is working to allow broader distribution of the funding.
