Rothman Opposes Bush's Escalation of the Iraq War
Congressman Steve Rothman (D-NJ), a member of the Defense Appropriations Subcommittee, issued the following statement about President Bush's proposal to send more U.S. troops to Iraq:
"The President's open-ended commitment of more US troops will result in the death and wounding of thousands more American soldiers, cost taxpayers tens of billions of dollars more and do nothing to help the Iraqi people or their Middle Eastern neighbors resolve the Iraqi civil war.
"In fact, this escalation will 'turn up the heat' on the already boiling anti-American fanaticism in Iraq and the region. At the same time, the President's plan further weakens our severely overstretched and depleted military and makes us less able to face the known and unknown threats that actually pose a danger to our country.
"President Bush's escalation of the Iraq war will weaken America's national security and I will do everything in my power to stop it."
