(Rutherford, NJ) Standing outside Rutherford's historic train station, Congressman Steve Rothman (D-Fair Lawn) today presented Mayor Bernadette McPherson with a symbolic check for $2 million to enable New Jersey Transit to renovate the waiting room and interior of the building. The work to restore the exterior of the station to its original architectural appearance is already in design and will be constructed with state funding, but NJ Transit says it would not have been able to move forward on the inside without federal support.
"I am pleased to deliver this federal funding to the people of Rutherford and thank Mayor McPherson for her tireless search for federal support of local projects that improve the character and safety of her town," said Rothman. "In the case of the Rutherford Train Station, we are not only restoring the building's century-old elegance from the inside out, but also making it useful again and preventing even costlier repairs down the road."
"The borough and NJ Transit have been working together on methods to maintain and repair the Station. It is a beloved focal point of our community and a significant piece of our history. Congressman Rothman has always recognized that and his efforts on the Borough's half demonstrate that," said Mayor McPherson.
Mayor McPherson announced the funding earlier this year during a Rutherford Council meeting and she and the Congressman used today's event to describe the project in more detail. They said the ultimate goal is to refurbish the station inside and out, re-creating the original architectural appearance of the 109-year-old rail station and improving conditions for passengers using the facility. The project will be done in accordance with historic preservation guidelines.
"Thanks to the funding secured by Congressman Rothman and his continued support of NJ TRANSIT, we will be able to advance the Rutherford Station restoration project, which will preserve the Borough's treasured historic train station and offer an improved commuting experience for area residents," said NJ TRANSIT Executive Director Richard Sarles.
Congressman Rothman has been a member of the powerful House Appropriations Committee since 2001. Since then, he has secured $10.85 million for inter-modal transportation projects in Northern New Jersey. The money is specifically for transportation projects administered by NJ Transit. The $2 million presented to Mayor McPherson today comes from this pool of funding.
