Honoring Holocaust Hero Varian Fry

Varian Fry Centennial Resolution
October 15, 2007- Today, on what would have been the 100th birthday of Varian Fry, a Holocaust hero from Ridgewood, NJ, Congressman Rothman introduced a Resolution honoring Fry and his courage. During World War II, Varian Fry saved the lives of 2,000 Jews and other anti-Nazi refugees in Occupied France. Among those he rescued were 200 of the brightest scholars in the fields of art, science, literature and medicine, including the painters Marc Chagall and Max Ernst, the political scientist Hannah Arendt, and Nobel-Prize winning biochemist Otto Meyerhof. October 9, 2007- Rep. Rothman this week joined Ridgewood's Acting Postmaster Mary Ellen Murray, Ridgewood Councilman Jacques Harlow, and advocate Catherine Taub to unveil a special postal marking created in honor of the 100th birthday of Varian Fry. Known as a 'cancellation stamp,' it will be available at the Ridgewood Post Office for the next month. Read more about this event in the first of three articles in a series by Jewish Standard.

March 9, 2007- Congressman Rothman re-introduced his legislation to urge the United States Postal Service to issue a nationally available commemorative stamp in honor of Varian Fry. Read more.
