Federal Funds Are Available to Help Secure Our Schools
October 2006 "Despite tough fiscal times, the first obligation of government remains the same. We must keep the public, and especially our children, safe," said Rothman. "That is why in 2000, along with my friend Rep. Henry Hyde (R-IL), I created Secure Our Schools. This federal matching grant program helps towns cover the cost of school safety measures, such as metal detectors, locks, lighting, and other crime prevention tools. It also funds security assessments, training for students, teachers, and administrators, coordination with local law enforcement, and other actions that significantly improve school safety." Congratulating Hasbrouck Heights High School
December 14, 2006 During the final hours of the 109th Congress, Congressman Rothman congratulated Hasbrouck Heights High School. Rep. Rothman's remarks, which have been documented in the Congressional Record, began: "Mr. Speaker, I rise to congratulate the dedicated students and faculty at Hasbrouck Heights High School who have made The Pilot’s Log an award-winning and exemplary newspaper year after year. NJ Newspaper Hails Congressman Rothman's Role in a Democratic Majority
November 17, 2006
An editorial in a New Jersey newspaper outlined the importance of Congressman Rothman's position on the House Appropriations Committee now that Democrats will be in the Majority. "The congressional committees with the most direct impact on all legislation are the committees controlling the money. Legislation without funding is as useless as a campaign lawn sign the week after Election Day... With Lautenberg and Rothman in key appropriations committee posts, North Jersey should get a bigger piece of the pie." Read the full article.

Jersey City to Build New Public Safety Communications Center
November 14, 2006 On Monday, November 6, Congressman Rothman joined Jersey City Mayor Jerramiah Healy and others to break ground on a new Public Safety Communications Center for the city.
This new center was made possible by $12.4 million in federal funding that Congressman Rothman, Senator Bob Menendez, and former-Senator Jon Corzine secured after September 11, 2001. Read more.

New CyberCrime Lab at Fairleigh Dickinson
October 16, 2006
Congressman Rothman and Fairleigh Dickinson University (FDU) President J. Michael Adams announced the opening of a new Cyber Crime Lab to train law enforcement officers to solve crimes involving computer fraud and digital evidence. The new state-of-the-art facility was made possible by $600,000 in federal support obtained by Rothman. Read more.

How Are New Jersey Workers Doing This Labor Day?
September 4, 2006 This Labor Day, Congressman Rothman renews his call for smart federal policies that help—rather than hurt—working families. He is appalled by new U.S. Census Bureau data released last week which show that 14,000 more New Jerseyans live below the poverty level than did in the year 2001 when President George W. New Jersey Principals Discuss Education Programs with Rep. Rothman
August 2, 2006 On Thursday, July 27, New Jersey principals met with Rep. Rothman to discuss federal funding for education. In particular, they noted that there is a shortage of principals in New Jersey and agreed with Rep. Rothman about the importance of federal funding for the School Leadership Program. Read more.

Violent Crime Impact Team Can Make a Difference in North Jersey
June 28, 2006 On Thursday night, Rep. Rothman secured an on-the-record promise from Rep. Frank Wolf to direct one or more of the 15 Violent Crime Impact Teams funded by his Committee to focus on New Jersey. Said Rothman: "Violent crime is on the rise for the first time in 15 years, but families in Newark and Jersey City don't need a report to tell them that fact. Despite New Jersey's tough gun laws, firearms have been trafficked to criminals and gang members from out-of-state sales and those guns have been used to kill and maim our people. Read more.

Commemorative Stamp In Honor of WWII Hero from Ridgewood, NJ
June 22, 2006 Congressman Rothman introduced a Congressional Resolution urging the U.S. Postal Service (USPS) to issue a stamp in honor of Varian Fry, an American journalist from Ridgewood, NJ. Fry is credited with saving the lives of 2,000 Jews and other anti-Nazi refugees in occupied France from 1940 to 1941.

Congressional Former Mayors Caucus Announced
May 24, 2006 Representatives Bill Pascrell, Jr. (D-NJ-08) and Steve Rothman (D-NJ-09) were joined by a bipartisan group of legislators to announce the Congressional Former Mayors Caucus. As members of this Caucus, they will help raise awareness about the effect federal decisions—such as cuts to community development grants—can have on current mayors. Read more.

Fighting $8 Million Cut to Clean Water Fund for New Jersey
May 18, 2006 During a House Appropriations Committee meeting, Congressman Rothman voted to eliminate a small portion of the tax cut for individuals making over $1 million and use those funds for clean drinking water and alternative energy research. The vote struck close to home as the Republicans proposed gutting state clean water funds by $872 million, which included cutting $8 million from New Jersey's Clean Water Fund. Read more.

Saving 8,400 Acres in the Meadowlands for an Environmental Park
May 1, 2006 Joined by third graders learning about the Meadowlands, Rep. Rothman and the New Jersey Meadowlands Commission (NJMC) announced progress toward an 8,400-acre environmental park in the Meadowlands thanks to ongoing federal support. Rothman presented the NJMC with $3,660,000 to continue planning and preservation activities in the Hackensack Meadowlands. Read more.

April 24, 2006 "We must preserve the Community Development Block Grant program and ensure that HUD awards those grants fairly. We should not, as the President's budget sets forth, slash the federal commitment to affordable housing and community development," said Rep. Rothman. Read more.

Announcement: Over $1.9 Million Grant for Soundproofing at Sylvan School
March 29, 2006 Congressman Rothman, a Member of the Subcommittee on Transportation of the House Appropriations Committee, announces a federal grant totaling $1,997,721 for the soundproofing of Sylvan School in Rutherford, New Jersey. This project is vital to the students and teachers at Sylvan School, who are currently distracted by aircraft noise caused by planes flying in and out of nearby Teterboro Airport. Read more.

Menendez, Rothman Introduce Legislation to Help Law Enforcement Prosecute Gun Crimes
March 27, 2006 United States Senator Robert Menendez (D-NJ) and Congressman Rothman introduced legislation to make data about guns used in crime and illegal gun sales public. This information was freely available until 2003, when a legislator from Kansas passed language known as the "Tiahrt Amendment" to prevent the Bureau of Alcohol Tobacco and Firearms (ATF) from releasing data about the states where most crime guns originate. “I find the disconnect between the FAA’s people in Washington, DC and the real concerns of the Port Authority and my constituents very disturbing. Washington, DC doesn’t always know best and instead of threatening the Port Authority, you should work with them to improve safety and reduce the number of flights at Teterboro Airport,” said Rothman. Rothman Presents New Jersey Transit with $3.6 Million for Northern Branch
February 13, 2006 Congressman Rothman presented New Jersey Transit Chief George Warrington with $3.6 million in federal funds to help New Jersey Transit make the long-awaited Northern Branch Line a reality for commuters in Northern New Jersey. Thanks to this funding, which comes at a time when the federal government is scaling back its commitments to public transportation, New Jersey Transit announced that it can complete the design and engineering work necessary to start construction by 2008 and finish the job by 2011. $250,000 for Security Enhancements to Bergen County Court House
February 6, 2006 Congressman Rothman presented $250,000 in federal funds for the Bergen County Sheriff’s Office to spend on courthouse security enhancements. Sheriff Leo McGuire approached Rothman about enhancing safety at the courthouse after a high-profile courthouse shooting in Atlanta, GA left a judge and three others dead last March. Read more.
