I may be able to assist constituents who have concerns or complaints about a product or business by directing their concerns to the appropriate regulatory authorities.  My office can also provide detailed information to constituents wishing to file a formal complaint about a doctor or healthcare provider, landlord, or attorney.

Question: How can I file a complaint about an unsafe product or a company selling an unsafe product?
Answer:

Contact the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) via their toll-free consumer hotline:

  •  Phone: 800-638-2772 (TTY: 800-638-8270) 

You may call to obtain product safety and other agency information and to report unsafe products. This hotline is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Question: How do I file a complaint about a company or an unfair business practice?
Answer:

You may wish to file a complaint with the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) about a particular company or organization by visiting the FTC’s Bureau of Consumer Protection web site.

Please note that the FTC does not resolve individual consumer problems. However, your complaint helps the FTC investigate fraud, and may ultimately lead to law enforcement action. 

You may also want to consider contacting the State of Wisconsin’s Department of Trade, Agriculture and Consumer Protection (WDTACP) using the information listed below:

 

Question: What if I’m having a problem with my landlord?
Answer: For information about your rights as a tenant or to file a complaint against a landlord, please contact the State of Wisconsin’s Bureau of Consumer Protection (WBCP) using the information listed below:

Question: What do I do if I need to file a complaint about a bank or credit union?
Answer: You may want to consider contacting the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency (OCC). This federal agency is able to help customers of national banks with questions or complaints they have about their financial institution.

Please note that the OCC may have to refer your complaint if the financial institution does not fall under their jurisdiction. You will be notified if your complaint is to be referred.

Question: How can I file a complaint about a judge or an attorney?
Answer: A complaint against an attorney can be made with the State of Wisconsin’s Office of Lawyer Regulation, and the Wisconsin Judicial Commission investigates allegations of judicial misconduct.

Question: I need to make a complaint about my utility company. Who should I contact?
Answer: The Public Service Commission of Wisconsin (PSC) is an independent state agency that oversees more than 1,100 Wisconsin public utilities that provide electricity, heat, water and telecommunication services.

Question: I need to make a complaint about my telephone company, my cell phone provider, my internet provider, or my cable provider. Who should I contact?
Answer: You may want to file a complaint with the Federal Communications Commission (FCC). The Consumer Inquiries and Complaints Division of the FCC provides informal mediation and resolution of individual informal consumer inquiries and complaints consistent with controlling laws and FCC regulations.

Question: Is there any way to stop unsolicited phone calls, emails, or faxes?
Answer: To stop unsolicited phone calls, register your telephone number with the National Do Not Call List by calling toll-free 1-888-382-1222, or by visiting the Do Not Call List's web site

You may also want to register your phone number with the Wisconsin No Call List by calling toll-free 1-866-966-2255, or by visiting Wisconsin No Call List's web site.

Question: Can I get my name removed from “junk” mail lists?
Answer: You can contact the Direct Marketing Association (DMA) are request that your name be removed from all national mailing lists. You can write to the DMA at the address below:
