Congress is expected to reauthorize the
No Child Left Behind (NCLB) Act this year.
This legislation contains some reforms I favor and
others I do not. The debate on reauthorization
is likely to focus on a variety of issues, including
the impact of testing on students, funding
authorization levels, and education for disabled
students. Additionally, with globalization and
growing reliance on technology, Congress has worked
to address higher education accessibility - a matter
of great importance to the citizens of Wisconsin, as
well as the rest of the country.
With my support, on August 2, 2007, the House
of Representatives passed the conference report for
H.R. 2272, the America COMPETES Act.
Signed into law by President Bush on August 9, 2007,
H.R. 2272 includes: grants for higher education
institutions or non-profit organizations for
improving science/math instruction; grants for
scientists and engineers at the early stage of their
careers in higher education or research; and grants
for National Science Foundation programs aimed at
educating people in science and math. Congress
must continue to call for more information on
college costs and outcomes. With rising costs
and affordability remaining pressing issues, we must
seek transparency in relation to retention rates,
tuition costs, and what schools are doing to curb
costs. For more information on this subject, please see my
Education Issue
Paper.
