Paul Ryan talks with Jay Weber about spending, debt, and health care reform
1130 WISN - The Jay Weber Show
July 15, 2009

audio

"We want providers - doctors, hospitals, and insurance companies – competing against and with each other for our business. We don’t want to go to government and ask for hand-outs. We want a free-market fix, which means choice, competition. We want a patient-centered system where the key decision makers – the nucleus of the system – are the patient and the doctor not a government or insurance bureaucrat.

"You can fix these health care problems without the government taking it over. This health care debate is really more about do we want to have a social welfare state where more people are worried about dependency and security than they are about liberty and freedom? It’s a question of: do we keep the American idea going in the 21st Century or do we replace it with a European notion that the government is here to equalize the results of people’s lives? Do we maintain the idea – the American idea – that we want to strive for equal opportunity?"
