1st District Heroes
 Christopher
T. Cook, of Mukwonago,
Wisconsin, was awarded the Bronze Star Medal with "V" device (signifying
valorous conduct in the face of the enemy) for meritorious
achievement during Operation Iraqi Freedom.
On
September 12, 2004, a three vehicle convoy of ten
personnel from Company B/118th Medical Battalion,
was en route from Camp Victory, Baghdad
International Airport, to the 31st Combat Support
Hospital in the Green Zone. Approximately four
miles into the seven mile trip, the convoy was
stopped at a U.S. military road block for the removal
of an improvised explosive device (IED). While
Sergeant Cook was maintaining security, a
suicide car bomber suddenly approached the convoy at
a high rate of speed. With no cover and a
disregard for his own personal safety, Sergeant Cook
placed himself in great danger and engaged the
oncoming enemy with two shots, causing the car bomb
to detonate before it was fully able to engage the
convoy, saving the lives of at least three of his
fellow soldiers.
Although
seriously injured and unable to walk, Sergeant Cook
maintained order and directed the medics to
appropriate casualties during the incident.
His actions allowed the medics and other soldiers on
the scene to recover from the attack and render
appropriate treatment and action.
On Saturday, June 16, 2007, Congressman Ryan presented
Staff Sergeant Cook with the Bronze Star Medal with "V" device during a special ceremony attended by
Brigadier General James Krueck (Deputy Adjutant
General - Army, Wisconsin Army National Guard), family and
friends.
