RYAN URGES Time MAGAZINE TO NAME THE
AMERICAN G.I. AS PERSON OF THE CENTURY

"In view of their role in the world, it is befitting that we recognize these proud
patriots in singular honor as the Person of the Century."

JANESVILLE - First District Congressman Paul Ryan today announced that he has joined with several members of Congress and former Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, General Colin Powell, in urging Time Magazine to name the American G.I. as it Person of the Century.

Ryan joined in writing a letter to Time Magazine Managing Editor Walter Issacson expressing the significance of the American G.I. and the role these men and women have played in shaping the 20th Century. The magazine is expected to officially name its Person of the Century in its first edition for 2000.

"No collective group of men and women have had such an impact on the freedom and prosperity enjoyed both here in the United States and abroad than the American G.I.," said Ryan. "In both times of war and peace these proud patriots have secured the freedoms and liberties we live with each day. Millions of Americans have put their own aspirations aside in defense of our nation, many of whom have paid the ultimate sacrifice."

"In view of their role in the world, it is befitting that we recognize these proud patriots in singular honor as the Person of the Century. While we still face threats throughout the world, we see more and more promise each day. This promise has been the product of the service put forth by the millions of men and women who we proudly recognize as the American G.I."
