RYAN PRAISES TAX RELIEF FOR ALL TAXPAYERS AS PRESIDENT SIGNS LEGISLATION INTO LAW

WASHINGTON – First District Congressman Paul Ryan today attended the White House signing ceremony where President Bush signed the first broad tax relief legislation in a generation into law. Following the ceremony, Ryan made the following statement regarding the tax relief package, which the U.S. House of Representatives had passed on May 26:

"We witnessed a rare sight today: Washington returning money to taxpayers rather than spending it. In signing this across-the-board tax relief package into law today, the President demonstrated a belief that the American people know best how to spend their own money, not Washington bureaucrats. Americans have overpaid their taxes for years, and now every taxpayer will be getting a long-overdue refund. After all, since World War II, such broad tax relief has only happened two other times."

"The legislation that became law today was the product of hard work and negotiation on the part of the President and Members of the House and Senate – both Republicans and Democrats. I am hopeful that we can keep working together in a bipartisan way to make further progress in the days ahead. This tax relief is done while also honoring our priorities of paying down the national public debt, stopping the raid on Social Security, and providing prescription drug coverage through Medicare reform."

Ryan also announced that, starting today, visitors to his website - www.house.gov/ryan - will be able to click on a link that will allow them to calculate their estimated tax savings as a result of the tax relief package that became law today.
