JANESVILLE – First District Congressman Paul Ryan today announced that the State of Wisconsin will receive federal funding from a state grant program administered by the U.S. Department of Education. The new grant will help advance the overall goal for the Wisconsin Advanced Placement Incentive Project (WAPIP) to develop a statewide system aimed at improving opportunities for low-income and minority students to access AP course work and take the AP exams.
According to the U.S. Department of Education, the grant will be in the amount of $998,854 for the period 10/01/2001 through 09/30/2002. It is anticipated that the grant will be for a total of three years.
"This is good news for school districts in our area as well as statewide who could benefit from this funding," Ryan said. "It's important to provide students at all public schools access to quality advanced placement courses and preparation for AP exams, and I believe this grant will greatly help in achieving this aim."
In recent weeks, as the school year began, Congressman Ryan encouraged the U.S. Department of Education to make this grant money available to the State of Wisconsin as soon as possible so that it could be promptly put to use in area schools.
